On Farm Refrigeration

Centigrade has a fleet of more than 10 service vehicles available to service farm refrigeration requirements. At Centigrade we know the importance of farm refrigeration and the urgency when something goes wrong. Therefore we offer a 24 hour breakdown service where one of our technicians will be on site, at your farm, when you need us.

Each Farm refrigeration technician is familiar with the guidelines set by dairy companies for the optimal cooling of milk. They are trained to meet and exceed these guidelines and will ensure your farm refrigeration installation will maintain your milk quality while on your farm.

The products we supply, install, and maintain meet the industry standard with some innovative solutions that lead the way. Additionally, we manufacture custom cooling solutions using modern low Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants.

Energy storage and optimisation for your refrigeration equipment is available through a free of charge visit from our team, get in touch today.

Our goal is to provide you with quality service and maintenance backed up with innovative products when it’s time to update/upgrade. We’re very good at the basics providing quick solutions to customers who just want things fixed without fuss and bells and whistles. We have refrigeration products that are industry leading using natural refrigerant, energy storage and optimised for energy performance.

Energy Storage:

A range of Ice Builders and Glycol chillers from 1,200 Litres to 30,000 litres, coupled with one of our solar solutions, gives you significant long-term savings. Custom-built or off the shelf from our suppliers, we’ll have a solution that fits your needs, or we’ll build it for you!

A combination Glycol, Ice Builder system that pumps Glycol out to your storage vats while storing energy (ice Builder) off-peak as ice to pre-chill your milk. An excellent way to reduce your on-farm refrigerant charge while significantly reducing risk, and the refrigerant we use has an almost zero GWP per kg, reducing your exposure to nuisance taxes.

Glycol, using pumped glycol to chill your vats and pre-chilling the milk, is another excellent way to significantly reduce your on-farm refrigerant charge, reducing risk, plus the refrigerant we use has an almost zero GWP per kg, reducing your exposure to nuisance taxes.

Natural Refrigerants

The next wave of refrigerants are here with A3 and A2L refrigerants with GWPs per kg of 149 down to 1. Previous generations of refrigerants sitting on farms have a Global Warming Potential (GWP) ranging from 1500 through to 4500 per kg.

The basics of GWP are….
Global Warming Potential (GWP) in New Zealand is the measure used to compare a greenhouse gas's heat-trapping ability to that of carbon dioxide, expressed as a ratio or Co2 equivalent. It considers how much heat a gas traps and how long it stays in the atmosphere, with calculations typically based on a 100-year timeframe (GWP100).

New Zealand uses GWP to convert its non- Co2 greenhouse gas emissions into a single Co2 figure for reporting and policy-setting, which increases its total emissions figures based on current scientific assessments.

A few common refrigerants and their GWP or Co2 equivalent:

  • 1 Kg of R404a = 3922kg of Co2
  • 1kg of R448a/R449a = 1397kg of Co2
  • 1kg of R290 = 3kg of Co2
  • 1kg of R744 = 1kg of Co2

Hot Water Heat Pumps – On Farm

Up to 45% of the energy used in a milking shed goes into heating water. Our hot water heat pumps can be supplied off the shelf or built to your specific needs. When properly installed, they reduce the electrical load on the shed by at least 35%.

A standard electrical element in a hot water cylinder delivers one kilowatt of heat for every kilowatt of electricity used. In comparison, our hot water heat pumps can produce up to six kilowatts of heat for each kilowatt of electricity consumed, giving a 6:1 efficiency ratio.

We offer hot water heat pump systems from 340 litres to 5000 litres to suit different farm sizes and demands. Pairing a heat pump with solar can cut energy use even further, turning your setup into a practical “hot water battery.” On farms, this combination has reduced water heating costs by up to 55%, leading to faster payback periods.
